OBJECTIVE: Develop a multi-page (16 pg minimum ) book consisting of timothy samara’s 20 rules to good design that builds on the typographic principles. It will also dig deeper into the principles required to set large blocks of text over multiple spreads. Special attention will be paid to the concept of pacing, overall cohesiveness and consistency through the entire document.
PROCESS: This project started with sketches that set the pace for the book. Each rule was designated a single page aside from the rules that took up a full spread that included larger illustrations and a bright blue background. The spreads with the blue background appear every few pages so the reader does not get bored and so that their is some kind of spark of interest to look forward to. The overall look for the book is very muted and mellow. I wanted it to look similar to a manual one would find from the 60’s. I think the color palette helped achieve that look as well as the typography choices.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION: This project won a 2014 bronze American Advertising Federation award for book design.
