PLACE: California State University San Bernardino's Visual Arts Gallery 106.
SHOWING DATES: September 30th-October 8th
There is a natural connection between art and music. One can inspire the other and in my case every piece in the gallery was directly or indirectly connected to a specific song or album. This is more obvious with illustrations and photography. I tend to find inspiration through lyrics or sound and I think being able to capture this inspiration and transform it into various artworks can be magical. My intent for the gallery show was to share how I create art and the specific songs that helped me in the pieces that were up. The show consisted of many different mediums such as printmaking, graphic design, and photography and I’ve made it a point to be more open to new art forms because they can be an extremely helpful resource.
The show is called A Visual Mix(Tape) because of the variety of artworks being shown. Because music was a big part of my art process I decided to incorporate an actual mix CD with a track listing that coincided with specific pieces in the show.
PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS: The materials used to promote the exhibit consisted of physical mix tapes that had 17 tracks corresponding with 17 different pieces in the gallery and ticket stubs with the exhibition dates. The mix cd’s were a daunting task at first because it would take a lot of time and effort to make them by hand but I think having them made my the artist of the exhibit would be a nice touch. The ticket stubs were also printed and hand cut. they also have perforated lines so the admit one part of the ticket could be teared off like an actual ticket.
The theme of the exhibit was music and I thought having mix tapes and ticket stub’s would make anyone attending feel as if they just entered a concert venue ready to enjoy some music, or in this case art. The exhibition started as a concept that was sought through and completed within a few short weeks. I think by having a component that requires the attendee to do something extra (go home and listen to the mix cd) makes the exhibit sort of interactive and I wanted the exhibit to be more than a place where you walk in and out. I wanted it to be everlasting or at least something that people kept in their heads for awhile.
